It was such a pleasure interviewing a professor in my major. I chose to interview Dr. Nugent, my adolescent development professor. I chose her because she is the only female professor I have this semester and I figured I would have more in common with her than my other psychology professors. I got to learn about the types of writing I may be doing if I pursue a psychology degree.
Since psychology is technically a type of science, Dr. Nugent writes a lot of research orientated pieces. For graduate school, she worked on a collection of scientifically oriented journals. I’m not really looking forward to doing this type of writing in my future, but there will always be things that I don’t want to do, but I have to in order to get my Ph. D in psychology. I want to work with adolescents with drug addictions and eating disorders, so I’m sure I’m going to have to construct a number of research papers. Along with her research journals, Dr. Nugent also writes lesson plans, creates Power Points for class, and writes a syllabus for her classes.
Dr. Nugent also wrote her dissertation in August, which was her latest major piece of writing. She is in the process of getting it published, so she had to edit it and make sure everything was perfect and made sure everything fit into her journal entries. Dr. Nugent’s purposes for writing are to present and explain her research. Psychology is all about sharing your findings, so I will be doing a lot of that as well. She explained to me that she isn’t crazy about the writing she is responsible for, but it’s necessary in her field. Another purpose behind Dr. Nugent’s writing are contacting students and keeping them updated if anything in the syllabus changes.
The audience of Dr. Nugent’s writing is very different than most writing. She mainly writes for psychologists to make her work known in the industry. Her other audience would be her students. The lesson plans and syllabuses for her classes are another piece of writing which her students read multiple times. Being a psychology major, you write books later in your career once you have your Ph. D. Her purpose for writing is to get her research done and known by other psychologists. The more known your work is, the more successful you’ll be.
Along with other research articles, the one Dr. Nugent enjoyed the most was Teaching Sign Language to a Chimpanzee by R. Allen and Beatrix Gardner. The title of the article speaks for itself when it comes to content, but there are a few reasons why Dr. Nugent recommended this exact article to me. She stated this article doesn’t have a lot of scientific jargon that only the researchers themselves would understand, so it’s easier to read than most research articles. The authors also added anecdotes in their article reflecting some of the things the chimps did throughout the experiment which gave the writing more spunk than most research articles, and a spot in people’s memories.
I believe I benefitted a great amount from this assignment. I know what to be looking forward to in my future in the psychology department, and I got to know a little more about my professor than other students. One thing I took from this experience is that I need to get more into research papers because I will be doing a lot of them. I have a lot of confidence in what’s to come for the future.
